Preparation
  1. Sand and tack surface. Apply All-Purpose Sealer.
  2. Basecoat with two coats of Wild Rice. Allow to dry. Gently sand and wipe clean.
  3. Transfer main pattern lines.

Painting
  1. Sky. Base with Lavender Lace using the No. 12 flat shader. Sideload the brush with Opaque Blue, blend well on the palette, and apply along the top edge of the sky.

  2. Background trees. Holding the No. 12 flat shader vertically, pick up Medium Victorian Teal, and stipple the fir trees along the horizon line. Use the tip of the dirty brush to pick up Lavendar Lace, blend on the palette, and tap highlights on right side of each fir tree. Stipple shading on left sides with Black Green.

Use the dry deerfoot stippler with Medium Foliage Green to stipple the next layer of trees. Highlight the right side of each tree with Light Foliage Green. Stroking upward, pull some Burnt Umber trunks and branches, then very lightly stipple leaves with Light Foliage Green + Old Parchment (1:1).

Vertically holding the No. 12 flat shader with Medium Foliage Green + Golden Brown (2:1), stipple the fir tree to the left of the arbor.

  3. Grass. Base grass area with Light Foliage Green. While still wet, apply Apple Green near top of grass area and sweep horizontally downward. Horizontally sweep Medium Foliage Green behind the fence and in the foreground. Let dry.

  4. Background flowers. Stipple Medium Foliage Green + Black Green (2:1) greenery along horizon line. Vertically holding the No. 4 flat shader, stipple clumps of flowers with Royal Fuchsia, White, Lilac Mix (Royal Fuchsia + Opaque Blue + a touch of White, 2:1), Old Parchment, and Tomato Spice.

  5. Tree and bench. Transfer tree and bench. Use the No. 3 round to create bench, tree trunk, and branches with Burnt Umber and highlight with Old Parchment. Lightly stipple leaves on tree with Apple Green and highlight with Old Parchment.

  6. Shawl and hat. Base shawl with Royal Fuchsia, and while still wet, highlight with strokes of White and then shade with Lilac Mix. Base hat with Yellow, shade with Golden Brown, and line ribbon with Royal Fuchsia. Shade under hat with Lilac Mix.

  7. Transfer fence, arbor, and flowers.

  8. Fence and arbor. Base with White. Shade left sides of posts and underside of arbor with Lilac Mix.

  9. Roses. Pulling upward, create rose branches with Burnt Umber. Use the No. 3 round or the chisel end of the No. 2 flat shader with a double-load of Black Green and Medium Foliage Green (dip into the darker color, then tip into the lighter color) to dab leaves.

Use the No. 2 flat shader with White to tap each four-petal climbing rose. When dry, pick up a little Royal Fuchsia + Clear Faux Finish Glaze Base (1:3) and randomly touch around the centers of the flowers. Use the stylus with Medium Foliage Green + Golden Brown (2:1) to dot centers. Randomly tint petals with a float of Opaque Blue.

  10. Foreground flowers. Stipple Medium Foliage Green + Black Green (2:1) greenery at the base of the fence at the edge of the design, then stipple with Medium Foliage Green.

Work from left to right to create the foreground flowers. To create the yellow flowers, dip one corner of the No. 2 flat shader in Yellow and the other corner in Golden Brown, move the brush in a half circle, then complete the blossom with another half circle. Holding the No. 4 flat shader vertically, stipple dark leaves with Dark Foliage Green.

Lightly stipple tiny White flowers under the yellow flowers using the dry 3/8” deerfoot stippler. Use the tip of the round to dab larger blossoms with a double-load of Peach Mix (Tomato Spice + Old Parchment 1:1) and White.

Add Opaque Blue four dot flowers. Stroke Light Foliage Green and Dark Foliage Green leaves.

Stroke daisy petals with White and dot centers with Golden Brown. Pull stems and leaves with Light Foliage Green and Dark Foliage Green.

Create hollyhocks with Royal Fuchsia tipped in White using the No. 2 flat shader. When applying, squash the brush down and twist in a circle. Dab the buds at the top.

Create the next flower in the same manner with White tipped in Peach Mix.

Create yellow and blue flowers in the same manner as the previous yellow and blue flowers.

Create the flowers on the end by dipping one corner of the No. 2 flat shader in Lilac Mix and the other corner in Lavender Lace, move the brush in a half circle, then complete the blossom with another half circle.

Use the No. 4 flat shader with Dark Foliage Green + Black Green to stipple leaves around the flowers and to stroke tall grasses.

  11. Shadows. Float Opaque Blue shadows on the fence behind the flowers, under the tree alongside the bench, under the bench, and horizontally on the grass for the shadow of the gate.

Finishing
  1. Border. Shade around edge of design area with a float of Golden Brown.
  2. Lightly sand and tack surface. Apply at least three coats of varnish, lightly sanding and tacking between each application.
