Note: Pattern is sized to print on letter-size paper. Enlarge to fit your canvas.
Preparation
  1. Using low-tack painter’s tape, mask a 3”-wide border along all sides.
  2. Use the 2” glaze/wash brush to basecoat background with Blue Velvet. While still wet, blend in Blue Bayou from the top downward and Black from the bottom upward to create a slight gradation of color. Let dry.
  3. Transfer pattern.
Technique
Stenciling. Apply spray adhesive to stencil, let dry, pat off excess spray with paper towel, then press stencil firmly in place. Use the stencil brush to pick up small amount of color, pat on palette to remove excess paint, then pat over open areas of stencil using a straight up-and-down motion.
Apply two thin coats rather than one heavy coat. A heavy application will cause color to bleed under edge of stencil. When using stencils, mask off areas not being used with low-tack painter’s tape to keep color from being applied where it is unwanted.
Painting
Note: Apply an undercoat of White to any area that will be based in yellow or red so that fewer coats are needed for opaque coverage.
Building and lanterns
  1. Building. Using the No. 14 shader, base the dark section between the roof and the ceiling with Black and the building with Moroccan Red + a touch of Candy Bar Brown. Using the 1” glaze/wash brush, shade with a float of Candy Bar Brown and reinforce deepest shadows with a float of Candy Bar Brown + a touch of Black. Highlight with a float of Fire Red and brighten with Fire Red + a touch of Sunbright Yellow.
  2. Building trim and gong. Base with Metallic Bronze + Metallic 14K Gold (1:1) using the appropriate-sized brush. Stencil symbol of choice in middle of gong with Dark Burnt Umber, then move stencil 1/8” up and to the left and stencil with Metallic 14K Gold. Use the No. 14 shader to float shadows with Dark Burnt Umber and highlights with Metallic 14K Gold.
