Preparation

Note: Please take a moment to review all product packaging instructions before beginning the project.

  1. Sky. Use the 1” oval wash to slip-slap White and Tahiti Blue onto the upper two-thirds of the canvas. Use the mop to soften and blend as needed.
  2. Trace pattern onto tracing paper. Transfer mission to canvas.
Painting
  1. Mission. Pour a large puddle of Gel Blending Medium onto the palette as well as a puddle of each of the following colors: Bamboo, Bambi Brown, Drizzle Grey, Storm Grey, and Espresso. Load the No. 10 filbert with Gel Blending Medium, then dip brush into Bambi Brown and tip in Drizzle Grey. Slip-slap the walls to create a stucco look and add texture to the building. Continue working across the canvas, blending the colors to create light and dark values. Don’t worry about detail at this point.

When dry, transfer details, shingles, stones, and front curve of archway. Shade under each shingle with Storm Grey and reinforce with Charcoal. Highlight shingles with Drizzle Grey, and brighten with Drizzle Grey + White (1:1).

Add reflective light in each archway with a very light wash of Red. Create individual stones around each archway with brush mixes of colors from the palette.

  2. Bells. Base wood bell supports with Autumn Brown and bells with Storm Grey. Load the No. 6 shader with Gel Blending Medium and streak the supports with Autumn Brown, Espresso, Storm Grey, and Drizzle Grey to create the look of weathered wood. Working on one bell at a time, load the No. 6 filbert with Gel Blending Medium and Storm Grey and apply to the bell. Working wet into wet, shade bells with Charcoal + Payne’s Grey and highlight with Drizzle Grey. Apply wrought iron support bands with Charcoal.

  3. Base dancer. Transfer dancer. Base face and arm with Fleshtone, dress bodice and sleeves with OJ, and hair with Autumn Brown. Base stripes alternating Pop Pink, Green, Red, and OJ.

  4. Face and hair. Transfer facial details. Use the script liner with Medium Flesh + Autumn Brown (2:1) to very lightly outline eyes, nose, mouth, and ear. Shade under chin and around eyes with Medium Flesh; reinforce lightly with Autumn Brown. Base eye whites with White, irises with Autumn Brown, and pupils with Black. Create eyebrows and eyelashes with feather strokes of Autumn Brown. Base lips with Mendocino Red and drybrush highlights of Pop Pink.

Use shape-following strokes and a filbert rake to comb thinned Espresso through the hair. Reload with thinned Bamboo and highlight just behind the hairline.

  5. Dress. Flatten the No. 2 round to apply Black ribbon to the front of the bodice. Add lace detailing with White using the script liner.

Shade Red stripes with Mendocino Red, OJ stripes with Poppy Orange, Green stripes with Hunter Green, and Pop Pink stripes with Red. Highlight Red stripes with Pop Pink, OJ stripes with Orange Pop, Green stripes with Citrus, and Pop Pink stripes with Think Pink.

  6. Flower in hair. Apply a double-load of Mendocino Red and Pop Pink to flower. Reinforce highlights with Think Pink. Reinforce shading with Mendocino + a touch of Black.

  7. Guitar. Transfer guitar. Slip-slap with Terra Cotta, Georgia Clay, and Autumn Brown, fading the color from light to dark as you work downward. Base the hole with Black. Base neck, head, and bridge with Autumn Brown. Base the bridge nut and tuning pegs with Metallic 14K Gold. Outline guitar and line rosette around the hole with Autumn Brown using the script liner. Line the frets with Metallic 14K Gold and strings with White.

  8. Pot. Transfer outline. Base with White. Let dry. Transfer details.

Flowers along bottom of bands. Load the No. 10 filbert with Pop Pink and tip into White to stroke the pink flower petals, reloading the brush after each stroke. Apply flower centers with OJ using the No. 6 filbert. Add a smaller circle of Citrus inside each center. Line and dot center details with Red and Citrus.

Flowers along top of bands. Load the No. 10 filbert with Red and tip into White to stroke the red flower petals. Load the No. 10 filbert with OJ and tip into White to stroke the orange flower petals. Wash the centers with Citrus. Use the script liner to add dots, comma strokes, and outlines with OJ, Red, and Citrus.

Leaves. Use the No. 10 filbert with Green to stroke the large leaves. Let dry. To add detail inside the leaf, load the No. 6 filbert with Green and tip in Gecko. Pull three small comma strokes on one side of the leaf and pull one larger comma stroke on the opposite side.

Use the No. 6 filbert with a double-load of Green and Gecko to add the small leaves. Add veins and tendrils using a brush mix of Green + Gecko with the script liner.

Borders. Line borders above and below the flower bands with Red, Pop Pink, Citrus, OJ, and Red.

Wash remaining White pot with Pop Pink. Shade along sides and bottom with Charcoal.

  9. Sombrero. Transfer main pattern lines. No need to basecoat. Shade inside hat, inside brim, back of crease in crown, and brim with large floats of Autumn Brown, and reinforce with Espresso. Highlight down front of crown and at top of crease with Bamboo, and reinforce with Bamboo + White.

Transfer remaining details. Base trim and lines with Red, pompoms with Pop Pink, and fringe knots with OJ. Shade left side of pompoms with Red and highlight right side with a drybrush of Think Pink. Shade right side of knots with Poppy Orange. Add fringe to the knots with Poppy Orange, OJ, and finally Orange Pop.

  10. Banner. Transfer banner. Base with White. Let dry. Transfer background cosmos pattern. Working clockwise from the top, outline the first loop of each cosmos with Mendocino Red, the second with Red, the third with Pop Pink, and continue on with Think Pink, OJ, Orange Pop, Citrus, and finish with Gecko. Let dry. Wash very light shading along edges with White + a touch of Charcoal. Edge banner with a thick line of Red.

Transfer lettering. Base with Green. Shade the bottom and left side of each letter and outline the red borders with Charcoal.

  11. Float thinned Charcoal shading on background around guitar, vase, and between sections of dress.

Finish
  1. Basecoat sides of canvas with Payne’s Grey. Let dry.
  2. Finish with two or three coats of varnish.
