Countdown to Christmas
Hop on board and let us help you prepare for the holidays—a time for your home to glow with festive color and reflect the spirit of the season. Who can resist such a charming piece such as Rosemary West’s Gingerbread Express train? To celebrate the tradition of the musical part of the holiday celebration, we bring you several projects, including Erika Joanne Frei’s Bavarian Minstrel Cat, Cheri Rol’s Holiday Trumpet Box, and Lina Ferrara’s Four Calling Birds Ornament & Box. The best part is you don’t have to be “musically inclined” to enjoy them! We trust you will find something in this issue to bring a homespun touch to your holiday home.

‘Tis the Season to Share
With each new issue of A PaintWorks Christmas, we strive to bring you new, inspiring designs along with traditional favorites. This year’s collection proves to be again different from any other year. Among the projects for this holiday season, we are pleased to present several plaques that can be hung indoors for a festive look or placed outdoors as a welcome greeting to family and friends. We also feature florals for your tree—an elegant tree topper and freeform rose ornaments. Don’t forget the tabletop; try painting a gorgeous china hot chocolate/coffee set which makes for a striking display when not in use.

Autumn Arrives!
We have a variety of designs that reflect the vibrant color colors of autumn, as well as some special treats for Halloween. There’s something to go with most everyone’s decor—choose from landscapes, wildlife, fruits and vegetables, and more. This is the perfect time to begin collecting painting surfaces for holiday gifts and festivities—you can plan, collect, and paint extra-special items for family and friends, eliminating the stress of having to run out and purchase last-minute gifts. Garage sales, thrift shops, and rummage sales offer reasonably-priced merchandise. You’ll be amazed at what fun surfaces these treasure hunts will produce!

Inspired by Nature...
Spring is nearly here, and like many of you, I’m anxious for the return of the birds that flew south for the winter. We are all creatures of habit, and once again, awakening to the chorus of those favorite songbirds gives a sense of comfort...nature’s security blanket. Soon those doting parents-to-be will be building nests for their anticipated offspring. Refresh, renew, and rejuvenate for spring—we can all take a lesson from the wildlife around us.

Look Ahead to an Exciting Year!
This issue features the debut of “A Fresh Approach to Faux Finishes” by Tracy Moreau, “Explore Watercolor Techniques” by Bonnie Jones (this will be a shared column between Bonnie and Tom Jones), “Signs of the Times” by Lynne Andrews (an inspirational approach to decorative painting), and “The Inspired Palette” by Kelly Hoernig (decorating various rooms in a home using a palette inspired by the 2007 Home Furnishings Forecast released by Pantone, Inc.). Some of these columns will be ongoing and others will be presented four to five times a year. These new features will be joined by some of our old favorites, as well as additional new columns later on this year.

As the mercury drops and the days become shorter, we all know that soon the holidays will be here. Why not brighten your surroundings and the lives of those around you with this issue’s spectacular selection of holiday- and winter-themed projects. This issue features designs that can be adapted to a wide variety of surfaces to spruce up your home—from wall art to whimsical seating, the choices are as diverse as ever. ‘Tis the season for giving and sharing, so consider reaching out to others who are less fortunate. As a painter or member of a painting group, you can make a difference. Get together with fellow painters and hold a sale of hand-painted items, the proceeds of which can be donated to a charitable organization. Make this the year to truly “paint from the heart” and make someone else’s life just a little bit brighter.
